Little Women (Takase Naoko)

This manga adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel was illustrated by Takase Naoko as part of a trend of Japanese graphic retellings of Western literature. Produced to introduce younger readers to the nineteenth-century coming-of-age story, the volume utilizes a soft, expressive art style typical of shojo manga from the late twentieth century to capture the distinct personalities of the March sisters.

Takase Naoko’s interpretation focuses on the domestic warmth and emotional growth central to Alcott’s original text. By distilling the episodic structure of the novel into a concise visual narrative, the work successfully translates the Victorian-era morality and character dynamics into a format accessible to modern audiences, receiving appreciation for its faithful adaptation of the core relationships between Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy.
