Where it came from
Lone Wolf and Cub was originally serialized in Japan during the 1970s, written by Kazuo Koike and illustrated by Goseki Kojima. The series emerged during a period of heightened interest in jidaigeki, or period dramas, blending historical samurai themes with intense, cinematic action sequences. This second volume, The Gateless Barrier, continues the narrative of Ogami Itto, a disgraced shogunate executioner who travels as a mercenary assassin with his young son, Daigoro.
The partnership between Koike and Kojima is celebrated for its distinctive visual style, characterized by sweeping ink-wash aesthetic and unconventional panel layouts that mimic the pacing of Japanese cinema. The Dark Horse English translation was instrumental in introducing Western readers to gekiga—a more mature, dramatic style of manga. Upon its international release, the series was lauded for its uncompromising grit and its exploration of the complex, often brutal, ethical codes of the Edo period.
