Where it came from
Lone Wolf and Cub, originally serialized in Japan between 1970 and 1976, was written by Kazuo Koike and illustrated by Goseki Kojima. This seminal gekiga series follows Itto Ogami, a disgraced executioner who travels feudal Japan as a mercenary assassin accompanied by his young son, Daigoro. The series is celebrated for its cinematic pacing, minimalist dialogue, and Kojima's stark, ink-wash aesthetic that revolutionized the visual language of manga.
Dark Horse Comics began its definitive English-language translation and collection of the series in the early 2000s, bringing this epic to a wider global audience. Volume 17, The Will of the Fang, continues the visceral journey of the protagonist as the narrative pushes toward its intense conclusion. The translation effort was praised for maintaining the gravity of Koike's historical fiction while preserving the visual impact of Kojima's detailed, atmospheric artwork.
