Where it came from
Lords of Avalon: Knight of Darkness is a fantasy novel written by Robin Furth, published in 2007. It serves as the first volume in a series that reimagines the legends of King Arthur through a dark, atmospheric lens. Furth, who is widely recognized for her extensive research and work as the official researcher for Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, utilized her background in folklore and myth to craft a narrative that explores the darker corners of Arthurian lore, specifically focusing on the figure of Merlin.
The design and conceptual direction of the series were influenced by a desire to blend traditional high fantasy with more visceral, gritty storytelling elements. By centering the plot on Merlin’s struggle to secure Arthur’s rise to the throne amidst supernatural threats, Furth aimed to create a grounded but haunting interpretation of medieval legend. Upon its release, the work was received by critics as a creative departure from standard Arthurian tropes, praised for its dense world-building and commitment to a somber, mythological tone.
