Magazine Mystery Reportage - MMR

Magazine Mystery Reportage, commonly abbreviated as MMR, originated in the early 1990s as a manga series serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine. Written and illustrated by Ishigaki Yuuki, the series capitalized on the massive cultural popularity of the pseudoscientific book 'The 1999 Prophecies' by author Gotoh Ben. The narrative follows a team of reporters from the magazine who investigate various occult phenomena, conspiracy theories, and apocalyptic predictions in an effort to uncover the truth behind these sensational claims.

The artistic style of MMR is defined by its exaggerated, high-energy illustrations, which focus heavily on the dramatic and often frantic reactions of the protagonists as they encounter bizarre mysteries. While the series is categorized as supernatural mystery, it is frequently remembered for its campy delivery and the over-the-top presentation of its subject matter. It remains a notable relic of 1990s Japanese pop culture, capturing a specific moment when global anxiety regarding the approaching millennium was at its peak.
