Where it came from
Magia Record: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Gaiden originated as a mobile role-playing game released in 2017, serving as an official spin-off to the seminal 2011 anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica. The narrative expands the franchise's dark fantasy world by shifting the setting to Kamihama City, where the protagonist, Iroha Tamaki, searches for her missing sister. The adaptation into a multi-volume manga series was facilitated by the collective Magica Quartet, maintaining the franchise's thematic focus on the heavy emotional and existential burdens placed upon young magical girls.
The visual direction of the manga builds upon the distinctive aesthetic established by original character designer Ume Aoki. By translating the complex, turn-based mechanics and branching narratives of the mobile game into a linear print format, the manga aims to emphasize the character development and internal struggles of the new ensemble cast. It received moderate critical reception as a bridge for fans of the source material, praised for deepening the lore of the Walpurgisnacht-shadowed universe while expanding the scope of the original show's grim narrative stakes.
