Where it came from
Maitetsu originated as a visual novel developed by the studio Lose, first released in 2016. The story is set in a fictionalized version of Japan where advanced humanoid machines known as Railords serve as control systems for locomotives, exploring themes of modernization, railway preservation, and the human-machine connection. Its development was marked by a strong emphasis on detailed mechanical illustrations and nostalgic aesthetics centered around steam trains, which helped establish its distinct identity within the visual novel market.
The character designs and core visual identity were spearheaded by the artist cura, whose work defined the aesthetic of the Railords. The production aimed to blend technical railway enthusiasm with character-driven drama, leading to a well-received reception that encouraged the creation of various adaptations, including console ports and an anime project titled Rail Romanesque. Critics frequently highlighted the technical dedication shown in the locomotive renderings as a defining characteristic of the franchise.
