Manga Tolstoy: What do People Live By?

Published as part of the Manga de Dokuha series, this volume adapts Leo Tolstoy's 1885 short story 'What Men Live By' into the visual language of Japanese manga. The series was designed to make classic world literature accessible to a contemporary Japanese audience, stripping away the dense prose of the original 19th-century works in favor of streamlined narratives and emotive, sequential art.

The adaptation was supervised by Kameyama Ikuo, a prominent scholar and translator of Russian literature. His approach aimed to preserve the moral and spiritual essence of Tolstoy's parable about an angel sent to earth, ensuring that the transposition into a graphic medium did not compromise the philosophical gravity of the source material.
