Manga Yonin Shosei

Published in 1931 in San Francisco, Manga Yonin Shosei (Four Students) is widely recognized as one of the earliest examples of a full-length graphic novel produced in the United States. Henry Yoshitaka Kiyama, an immigrant artist who had studied at the San Francisco Art Institute, created the work to document the lived experiences of Japanese immigrants navigating the complexities of American life during the early 20th century. Through a series of silent, sequential panels, the narrative follows four young men as they attempt to reconcile their cultural heritage with the realities of work, education, and social adjustment in California.

The artistic style of the volume reflects Kiyama's formal training, blending traditional Japanese ukiyo-e influences with the expressive potential of the burgeoning newspaper comic strip format. While the work received little mainstream attention upon its initial self-publication during a period of intense anti-Japanese sentiment, it has since been canonized by scholars and historians as a vital primary source for understanding the Issei experience.
