Where it came from
Meikyuu Black Company, known in English as The Dungeon of Black Company, is a manga series written and illustrated by Yasumura Youhei. It began serialization in 2016 through Mag Garden's Mag Comi website. The narrative centers on Kinji Ninomiya, a modern-day slacker who is transported to a fantasy world, only to find himself forced into grueling manual labor for a mining corporation, subverting traditional 'isekai' tropes by focusing on labor exploitation and corporate satire.
Yasumura's design aesthetic leans into the expressive, comedic facial contortions characteristic of contemporary gag manga, balanced against the standard architectural tropes of high-fantasy dungeon environments. The series has been received as a critical commentary on the 'black company' phenomenon in Japanese work culture. Its popularity led to an anime adaptation in 2021, which further cemented the series as a notable entry in the cynical or 'dark' fantasy subgenre of manga.
