Where it came from
Michika and Mari is a manga series created by the artist Tajima Rettou, known for their distinctively minimalist and emotive character studies. First serialized in the late 2010s, the work emerged as part of a contemporary wave of slice-of-life manga that focuses on the quiet, often melancholy, and intimate complexities of adult friendship and personal transition. The narrative follows the titular characters as they navigate their evolving connection, emphasizing internal monologue and subtle behavioral shifts rather than conventional plot-driven drama.
Tajima Rettou designed the series with a stripped-back aesthetic, utilizing sparse backgrounds and focused linework to draw the reader into the characters' immediate psychological states. This stylistic choice reflects a broader trend in independent-leaning manga to treat character interaction as a form of architectural space. Upon its release, the volume was well-received by critics and readers who favored contemplative storytelling, earning praise for its authentic portrayal of human distance and the nuanced way Rettou depicts the unspoken history between long-term companions.
