Mobile Suit Gundam - Char's Counterattack

Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack was released in 1988 as the first original theatrical film in the Gundam franchise. Directed and written by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the film served as the climactic conclusion to the long-standing rivalry between protagonists Amuro Ray and Char Aznable, which began in the original 1979 television series. Produced by Sunrise, the project was intended to provide a definitive end to the 'Universal Century' storyline established a decade earlier.

The film is notable for its sophisticated animation and the introduction of advanced mechanical designs, including the iconic Nu Gundam and Sazabi. Yutaka Izubuchi was responsible for the mechanical design, aiming for a more refined and weighty aesthetic compared to previous iterations. Upon its release, the film was received as a landmark in cinematic anime, praised for its complex narrative themes of political disillusionment and human evolution, and it remains a foundational entry in the mecha genre.
