Mobile Suit Gundam: THE ORIGIN 8: Operation Odessa

Mobile Suit Gundam: THE ORIGIN is a comprehensive manga retelling of the original 1979 anime series, written and illustrated by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. Yasuhiko, who served as the character designer and animation director for the original Sunrise production, began this project in 2001 to provide a more nuanced, modern exploration of the One Year War. Operation Odessa, the eighth volume in the English-language hardcover release by Vertical Comics, covers the pivotal military campaign where the Earth Federation launches a massive offensive to retake the resource-rich Odessa region from the Principality of Zeon.

The artistic direction of the series is celebrated for its intricate mechanical designs and deeply human character portrayals, which diverge from the original television production to provide a more grounded perspective on the conflict. By reimagining the narrative through a mature lens, Yasuhiko emphasizes the political and logistical complexities of the war. Upon its release, the series was highly praised for its high production values and remains a definitive work in the Gundam franchise, serving as both a tribute to the source material and a standalone masterpiece of science fiction storytelling.
