Where it came from
More Kindred of the Wild is a collection of animal stories written by Charles G. D. Roberts, a Canadian author frequently cited as the father of the Canadian short story. First published in the early 20th century, the volume emerged during a period of intense literary interest in the 'animal story' genre, which sought to portray the lives of wild creatures with a blend of scientific observation and romanticized narrative. Roberts was a central figure in this movement, crafting tales that emphasized the struggle for survival and the visceral instincts of nature.
The design and tone of the collection reflect the Victorian and Edwardian tradition of nature writing, focusing on the characterization of wildlife as protagonists within their own ecosystems. Roberts utilized his intimate knowledge of the Canadian wilderness to provide authentic settings, which contributed to his reputation for accuracy among his contemporaries. While his work was occasionally critiqued during the 'nature fakers' controversy of his time for anthropomorphizing his subjects, the stories remain significant for their influence on the development of modern nature literature.
