Mukashi Mukashi no Warui Majo

Mukashi Mukashi no Warui Majo, or Once Upon a Time There Was a Wicked Witch, is a manga series created by the artist Wasabi Neduka. Released within the landscape of contemporary Japanese storytelling, the work draws upon traditional fairy tale tropes while subverting them through the lens of a darker, more complex character study. The series emerged as part of a trend in late-2010s manga that explored the psychological motivations of folklore villains, positioning the titular witch not merely as an antagonist, but as a figure defined by isolation and nuanced moral ambiguity.

The aesthetic of the series is characterized by Neduka’s distinctive linework, which balances whimsical, storybook-inspired paneling with stark, emotive imagery meant to evoke a sense of melancholy. Neduka’s design choices were intended to bridge the gap between classic children’s literature illustrations and the character-driven depth expected in modern seinen manga. Upon its release, the volume was noted by critics for its atmospheric world-building and the understated, evocative nature of its visual narrative style.
