Where it came from
Mushi Mezuru Himegimi no Kekkon, authored by Miyano Mika, is a manga volume deeply rooted in the historical literary tradition of the Heian period. The narrative reimagines the classic Japanese short story The Princess Who Loved Insects from the Tsutsumi Chūnagon Monogatari, a collection of tales that often subverted the aesthetic ideals of its time by focusing on a protagonist who favored the natural world over the refined, courtly expectations of aristocratic beauty.
Miyano Mika’s adaptation seeks to bring this unconventional heroine to a contemporary audience, maintaining the spirit of the original’s satirical tone while modernizing the visual storytelling. By emphasizing the Princess’s divergence from societal norms, the work invites readers to reconsider historical concepts of femininity and social standing, providing a playful yet thoughtful exploration of a character who chose caterpillars and beetles over the traditional marriage prospects of the imperial court.
