Nagashima-kun

Nagashima-kun was serialized by Wachi Sanpei beginning in the late 1950s, emerging during a pivotal era for Japanese sports manga. The series was deeply rooted in the cultural phenomenon surrounding Shigeo Nagashima, the legendary Yomiuri Giants third baseman whose charisma and unconventional playstyle made him the face of professional baseball in Japan during the Showa era.

Wachi Sanpei’s design for the titular character leaned into the comedic and exaggerated tropes typical of gag manga of the time. Rather than a purely biographical account, the volumes capture the lighthearted, often surreal spirit of baseball fandom in post-war Japan. The work was well-regarded as a quintessential piece of sports-themed caricature, serving as both a tribute to the star athlete and a distinct reflection of the era's affection for the game.
