Where it came from
Nankai Trough Kyodai Jishin, created by the artist biki, is a work of disaster-themed manga that functions primarily as an educational or speculative piece regarding seismic activity. Produced against the backdrop of Japan’s heightened national awareness of the potential for a massive earthquake along the Nankai Trough, the work translates complex geological forecasts into a visual, narrative format to illustrate the potential impact on coastal regions.
The design of the work prioritizes clarity and urgency, utilizing manga aesthetics to demystify technical seismic data for a lay audience. By focusing on situational realism rather than sensationalism, biki aims to provoke thoughtful preparation among readers. Since its release, the volume has been noted within disaster prevention literature for its effectiveness in communicating scientific risks through accessible storytelling.
