Where it came from
Nanoni, Chigira-kun ga Amasugiru, written and illustrated by Anan Kujira, began serialization in Kodansha's Dessert magazine in 2017. The series emerged during a period of high demand for 'school-life' shōjo manga, focusing on the trope of 'fake' romance setups that evolve into genuine emotional connections. The narrative follows a girl who experiences a painful unrequited love and enters into a mock-romance contract with the school's star athlete to heal from the rejection.
Kujira’s design and artistic style lean into the classic shōjo aesthetic, emphasizing expressive character interactions and a gentle, romantic atmosphere. The series achieved significant commercial success within its demographic, eventually leading to a live-action film adaptation released in 2023. It is widely regarded as a quintessential example of modern teenage romance manga, praised by readers for its comforting tone and character development.
