Where it came from
NBA Story is a biographical manga series illustrated by Takaiwa Yoshihiro that chronicled the rise of professional basketball in the United States during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Commissioned to capitalize on the burgeoning global popularity of the NBA, the series served as an educational and promotional tool for Japanese audiences who were gaining unprecedented access to league broadcasts. Takaiwa utilized a dynamic, high-contrast art style typical of sports manga of the era to translate the intensity of televised games onto the printed page.
The series focuses on key figures and landmark moments in league history, aiming to humanize the stars of the court for an international readership. By breaking down complex plays and providing historical context for team rivalries, the work functioned as an accessible guide to American basketball culture. Upon its release, it was well-regarded for its technical accuracy in depicting player movements and was instrumental in deepening the appreciation of the sport among its domestic demographic.
