Neon Genesis Evangelion: Eva & Eva 2 Anthology

The Neon Genesis Evangelion: Eva & Eva 2 Anthology, compiled by Hakubayashi, emerged during the height of the original series' cultural phenomenon in the late 1990s. As part of a wave of derivative creative works that flourished following the show's broadcast, this volume serves as a collection of short-form manga stories that explore the psychological and surreal themes inherent to the Evangelion universe. It was designed to offer fans alternative interpretations of the characters and the complex NERV environment through the lenses of various guest artists.

This anthology is reflective of the Japanese dōjinshi culture that heavily supported the Evangelion franchise, where independent creators were encouraged to provide commentary on Hideaki Anno’s original narrative. The design prioritizes a stylistic blend of dramatic tension and character-driven vignettes, aiming to capture the series' signature melancholy while providing relief through more experimental, occasionally lighter artistic takes. It was received as a significant piece of fan-driven supplementary material, helping to sustain engagement with the franchise during the gaps between official media releases.
