New Journey of Yaji and Kita

New Journey of Yaji and Kita, or Yaji Kita Shin Dochu, was created by Hasegawa Machiko, a pioneering figure in Japanese manga who is most famous for her long-running strip Sazae-san. This work reimagines the classic Edo-period satirical novel Tokaidochu Hizakurige by Jippensha Ikku, adapting the picaresque adventures of the bumbling duo Yaji and Kita for a modern twentieth-century readership. By utilizing her signature minimalist, fluid line work, Hasegawa translated the bawdy humor and travel-focused chaos of the original literature into the accessible format of mid-century manga.

The series reflects Hasegawa's unique ability to blend traditional Japanese storytelling motifs with the burgeoning comic strip aesthetics of the post-war era.
