New Kiteretsu Encyclopedia

The New Kiteretsu Encyclopedia, known in Japan as Kiteretsu Daihyakka, was created by the legendary manga artist Fujiko F. Fujio, one half of the duo behind Doraemon. Serialization began in the late 1970s, emerging during a period when the genre of gadget-focused science fiction for children was gaining immense cultural traction. The narrative follows a young genius named Eiichi who constructs various inventions based on diagrams left by his ancestor, blending elements of historical intrigue with contemporary school-life tropes.

The design and visual style are quintessential of the Fujiko F. Fujio studio, characterized by rounded, approachable character silhouettes and intricate, whimsical illustrations of the encyclopedia's inventions. While the manga enjoyed steady popularity, the franchise achieved its widest international and domestic reach through its later television adaptations. It is widely regarded as a significant cultural staple of late 20th-century Japanese children’s literature, praised for its imaginative premise and the gentle, moralistic undertones common to the author’s body of work.
