Where it came from
New Sakura Wars the Comic was created to serve as a companion piece to the 2019 video game New Sakura Wars, which served as a soft reboot for the long-running Sega franchise. Serialized in Weekly Young Jump, the manga was written by Takaaki Suzuki, a veteran writer known for his meticulous approach to world-building, particularly in military and mechanical-themed fiction. His goal was to bridge the gap between the game's theatrical setting and the tactical realities of its steampunk-inspired universe, providing additional depth to the characters of the Imperial Combat Revue.
The artistic direction for the series maintains the aesthetic standards established by the franchise’s legacy, focusing on the character designs by Tite Kubo. The work was received as a functional expansion of the game’s narrative, catering primarily to established fans of the series who sought more context regarding the team’s dynamics and the defense of a fictionalized Taisho-era Tokyo. It remains a notable entry for collectors interested in the transmedia storytelling approach employed by Sega during the game's release window.
