Where it came from
New Tales of the 100 Tales was authored by Tsunoda Jirou, a veteran mangaka recognized for his significant contributions to the horror and supernatural genres in Japan. Published during a period when occult-themed manga were gaining substantial traction with Japanese audiences, this volume reflects Jirou's mastery of atmospheric storytelling. The series draws inspiration from traditional Japanese folklore and the 'hyakumonogatari kaidankai' tradition, reimagining classic ghost stories through a lens tailored for contemporary readers of the time.
Jirou’s approach to the series prioritizes psychological dread over overt gore, utilizing stark, illustrative panels to build tension. The design of the volume adheres to the stylistic conventions of its era, featuring intricate line work that emphasizes the ethereal nature of its subjects. Upon its release, the work was well-received within the horror manga community, solidifying Jirou’s reputation as an influential figure who could successfully bridge the gap between historical ghost lore and modern sequential art.
