Where it came from
The New X-Men Modern Era Epic Collection: Planet X serves as a trade paperback compilation of Grant Morrison's seminal run on X-Men, specifically gathering issues 146 through 150. Originally released in the early 2000s, this material represents the climax of Morrison's revolutionary reinvention of the franchise, which moved the team away from traditional superhero tropes toward a more gritty, postmodern aesthetic. The narrative arc concluded with a seismic shift for the mutant population, forever altering the status quo of the X-Men universe.
The design of these Epic Collection volumes is curated by Marvel editorial to provide a cohesive reading experience for modern audiences, often featuring original cover art by Marc Silvestri or Frank Quitely. While Morrison provided the high-concept scripts that redefined mutant culture and biology, the artistic direction aimed to ground the fantastic elements in a visceral, tactile reality. The run was highly influential, drawing both critical acclaim for its bold subversion of established continuity and debate among long-time readers regarding the radical changes to character dynamics.
