This collection represents the definitive English-language translation of Ivan Turgenev’s major works, famously rendered by Constance Garnett in the early 20th century. Commissioned by publisher William Heinemann, Garnett’s translations were instrumental in introducing Russian literature to the English-speaking world, offering a window into the social and political upheavals of 19th-century Russia for a generation of Western readers who had previously been isolated from these texts.

The physical design of this set mirrors the academic and literary prestige typically accorded to the 'library edition' style common in the Edwardian era. These volumes are characterized by restrained, utilitarian bindings intended for the serious reader’s shelf rather than for decorative display. While modern reprints like the ISBN provided reflect the text's enduring necessity for scholars, the original series remains a benchmark of literary translation history, favored for the grace and clarity Garnett brought to Turgenev's complex, melancholic prose.
