Novels and Romances of Charles Lever: Roland Cashel

Roland Cashel was originally published in 1849, emerging during the peak of Charles Lever’s literary career. Lever was a prolific Irish novelist of the mid-nineteenth century, known for his picaresque tales and depictions of military and social life. This specific volume belongs to the collected editions of his work, which aimed to preserve his sprawling narratives for later Victorian audiences who valued uniform library sets of popular fiction.

The physical design of these volumes typically reflects the mid-to-late nineteenth-century tradition of decorative cloth bindings and gold-leaf lettering. Illustrations for Lever's novels were famously executed by Phiz (Hablot Knight Browne), who provided the definitive visual interpretations of Lever's characters. These editions were received as fixtures of the gentleman's library, valued for their mix of high-spirited adventure and the distinct artistic collaboration between Lever and Browne.
