OL-sama no Tsukedokoro

OL-sama no Tsukedokoro is a manga series by the acclaimed artist Risa Itou, known for her sharp and observational humor regarding the lives of Japanese office workers, or 'office ladies' (OL). The series emerged during a period in the 1990s and early 2000s when manga focusing on the mundane, comedic realities of professional life gained significant traction in the josei demographic. Itou, a veteran of the industry, utilized a minimalist, expressive art style to capture the social dynamics, minor workplace triumphs, and relatable frustrations of her protagonists.

The design of the series centers on short, punchy vignettes that prioritize character chemistry over complex narrative arcs. Itou’s approach was to strip away unnecessary detail to emphasize the facial expressions and internal monologues of her characters, making the work feel immediate and approachable. Upon its release, the series was received as a quintessential example of workplace comedy, praised by readers and critics alike for its ability to find humor in the repetitive rhythms of corporate culture while maintaining a grounded, empathetic perspective on the daily labor of its characters.
