On Communion with God: Abridged from the Works of the Rev. Matthew Henry

Matthew Henry was a prominent 17th-century nonconformist minister, best known for his exhaustive biblical commentaries that have remained influential in evangelical circles for centuries. This specific volume serves as an abridgment of his original writings, which were crafted during a period of intense theological output aimed at providing practical, devotional guidance to the laity. The text reflects the quintessential Puritan focus on the internal spiritual life and the perceived necessity of constant fellowship with the divine, presented in a style that emphasizes clarity and earnest exhortation.

The publication of this abridged edition was intended to make Henry’s dense theological treatises more accessible to general readers who lacked the time or academic background to engage with his multi-volume sets. By distilling his core arguments regarding the nature of prayer and religious devotion, the editors sought to preserve the essence of his pastoral voice. The design of such volumes typically prioritized functional, durable bindings suited for personal study or use within a domestic religious setting, serving as a staple of pious literature in many households during the 18th and 19th centuries.
