Original Sanskrit Texts on the Origin and History of the People of India: Their Religion and Institutions. Inquiry whether the hindus are or trans-himalayan origin and akin to the western branches of the indo european race

Published in the mid-19th century, this seminal work by John Muir was conceived during the height of British intellectual interest in the linguistic and historical connections between India and Europe. Muir, a Scottish scholar and civil servant who spent years in the Bengal Civil Service, dedicated his scholarly efforts to bridge the gap between Western historical frameworks and the ancient Sanskrit corpus. This specific volume serves as an inquiry into the origins of the Hindu people, reflecting the Victorian scholarly preoccupation with ethnological theories and the search for common roots among Indo-European civilizations.

The design and analytical approach of the text prioritize a comparative methodology, placing Sanskrit scriptures alongside emerging theories of migration and race prevalent in European academia at the time. Muir’s rigorous compilation of texts was intended to provide a systematic scholarly resource for fellow Orientalists, though it remains a product of its era's colonial-era scholarship. The work was received as a significant, albeit complex, contribution to the field of comparative philology and ancient Indian history, documenting the scholarly rigor Muir applied to the synthesis of Eastern and Western intellectual traditions.
