Orlando furioso

Orlando furioso is a seminal epic poem first published in its complete form in 1532 by Ludovico Ariosto. Emerging from the Italian Renaissance, the work serves as a continuation of Matteo Maria Boiardo's Orlando innamorato, blending themes of chivalric romance, courtly love, and political satire. It was composed during Ariosto's service to the Este family in Ferrara, reflecting the complex cultural landscape of 16th-century Italy where traditional knight-errantry was increasingly re-examined through a humanist lens.

The poem is celebrated for its intricate, interwoven narrative structure and its masterful use of irony, which set a new standard for epic literature in the West. Ariosto’s innovative approach to the ottava rima stanza and his ability to balance the serious with the fantastical made the work immensely influential. Over the centuries, it has been illustrated by a diverse array of artists, ranging from Gustave Doré to contemporary graphic novelists, who have sought to capture the poem’s sprawling, magical, and often chaotic spirit.
