Where it came from
Osomatsu-san emerged in 2015 as a high-energy anime revival of Fujio Akatsuka’s classic 1962 manga series, Osomatsu-kun. Produced by Studio Pierrot to celebrate what would have been Akatsuka’s 80th birthday, the series reimagined the original sextuplets as directionless, adult neets living in contemporary Japan. This update sharply pivoted from the slapstick tone of the original work, injecting modern existential angst and surreal, subversive humor that resonated deeply with a new generation of viewers.
The character design team, led by Naoyuki Asano, preserved the clean, iconic aesthetic of Akatsuka’s original illustrations while subtly modifying the quintuplets' appearances to distinguish their personalities. The show became a runaway cultural phenomenon, characterized by its frantic pacing and willingness to parody its own status as a revived property. Its reception was overwhelmingly positive, quickly transcending its broadcast roots to become a staple of modern otaku culture and a massive driver of merchandising.
