Where it came from
Othello is a manga series authored by Otsu Hiyori, serialized in the early 2000s. The work emerged during a period when psychological suspense and gothic-themed shojo manga were gaining significant traction, focusing on themes of identity, social anxiety, and the dual nature of personality. It follows the story of a high school student who develops a split persona, exploring the consequences of the mask one wears in social environments.
The character design and visual direction are indicative of the period's aesthetic, favoring high-contrast imagery and expressive, moody linework to emphasize the protagonist's internal struggle. The series is perhaps most widely recognized for its television drama adaptation, which brought the story to a broader audience and solidified its reputation as a notable exploration of psychological conflict within the genre.
