Where it came from
The Otoko wa Tsurai yo manga series, illustrated by Hayashi Norio, was developed as a print adaptation of the immensely popular Japanese film series directed by Yoji Yamada. Premiering in the late 1960s, the films centered on the lovable, wandering peddler Tora-san, and the manga iterations served to expand his reach to a reading audience, capturing the quintessential Shitamachi atmosphere of old Tokyo through a comedic and heartwarming lens.
Hayashi Norio’s artistic interpretation focused on translating the cinematic warmth and distinct character expressions of actor Kiyoshi Atsumi into a serialized format. The design choice leaned into a traditional manga aesthetic that emphasized the gentle, human-centric storytelling of the original films. It was received as a nostalgic companion piece for fans who wished to revisit the adventures of Tora-san in a static, episodic medium, further cementing the character as a cultural icon of the Showa era.
