Otomentaru

Otomentaru is a shojo manga series created by the artist Mayumi Yokoyama, serialized in Bessatsu Margaret during the mid-2000s. The work emerged during a period when the genre was increasingly experimenting with comedic subversions of traditional gender roles and high school romance tropes. Yokoyama sought to craft a narrative that blended lighthearted humor with the earnest emotional beats expected of the shojo demographic, focusing on the character-driven dynamics of its central cast.

The design and illustrative style of the series are characteristic of the aesthetic prevalent in Bessatsu Margaret at the time, prioritizing expressive character designs and dynamic paneling to emphasize comedic timing. Upon its release, the series was received as a charming addition to the magazine's catalog, appreciated by readers for its accessibility and the playful, slightly hyperbolic approach Yokoyama took toward the common frustrations and joys of teenage life.
