Where it came from
Ousama Game: Kigen, written by Kanazawa Nobuaki, serves as a prequel to the broader Ousama Game franchise, which originated from a popular cell phone novel series. The work was published to expand upon the lore of the survival horror series, focusing on the mysterious origins and historical events that precipitated the deadly games. It explores the dark, psychological tension that defines the series, grounded in the premise of students being forced to participate in life-or-death challenges dictated by an anonymous sender.
The design and narrative structure of Kigen reflect the standard tropes of the Japanese horror-thriller manga genre, prioritizing escalating suspense and an ensemble cast caught in a hopeless situation. Kanazawa Nobuaki, who experienced significant success with the initial mobile-distributed story, utilized this installment to provide context to the series' supernatural elements. Upon its release, it was received as a companion piece for established fans of the franchise, leaning into the bleak, high-stakes storytelling that characterized the earlier Ousama Game manga and light novel adaptations.
