Paul Gerhardt's geistliche Lieder: in e. neuen vollst. Abdruck

This collection represents a significant effort to preserve and disseminate the spiritual hymns of Paul Gerhardt, one of the most prolific and esteemed German hymn writers of the seventeenth century. Originally composed during the tumultuous years of the Thirty Years' War, Gerhardt’s poetry served as a source of profound theological comfort and personal piety for his contemporaries. This particular volume was produced to offer a definitive, accessible compilation of his body of work, reflecting a nineteenth-century resurgence of interest in classical Lutheran hymnody and German literary history.

The editorial approach behind this printing aimed to standardize Gerhardt’s lyrics, which had previously been subject to various modifications and editorial liberties over the centuries. By returning to a fuller, more authentic collection of his texts, the publishers sought to honor the structural integrity of his verse while catering to a public interested in the cultural heritage of the Reformation. The reception of these collections remained steadfastly positive among liturgical scholars and those devoted to the German hymnological tradition, cementing Gerhardt's status as a foundational figure in the development of the German language and devotional music.
