Paul Gerhardts Geistliche Lieder: mit Einleitung und Lebensabriss

Paul Gerhardt, a 17th-century theologian and hymn writer, remains one of the most significant figures in German Lutheran hymnody. His works, composed during the turbulent era of the Thirty Years' War, sought to offer comfort and theological depth to a populace suffering from profound hardship. His poetry is characterized by a personal, emotive engagement with faith that transitioned the tradition from the rigid dogmatism of earlier eras toward a more intimate, subjective piety.

The volume 'Geistliche Lieder: mit Einleitung und Lebensabriss' serves as a critical edition, providing both the canonical texts of Gerhardt’s hymns and a biographical introduction to his life. By including a 'Lebensabriss' (a sketch of his life), the editors aimed to contextualize his compositions within his personal struggles, such as his experiences with exile and the loss of his family. These collections were standard in German intellectual households for centuries, serving as both devotional aids and foundational pieces of German literary heritage.
