Paulus Gerhardts geistliche Lieder: historisch-kritische Ausgabe

The historisch-kritische Ausgabe of Paul Gerhardt’s spiritual songs serves as a definitive scholarly endeavor to catalog and restore the hymns of one of Germany’s most significant seventeenth-century theologians. Commissioned to preserve the linguistic integrity of Gerhardt’s poetry, the work contextualizes his hymns within the turbulent backdrop of the Thirty Years' War, during which his verses provided both communal solace and theological steadfastness for the Lutheran tradition.

This edition was prepared by scholars dedicated to the rigorous study of German hymnody, aiming to strip away later editorial accretions that had altered Gerhardt’s original intent. By comparing early printings and manuscript traditions, the editors sought to present the hymns as they were originally conceived, securing their status as essential documents of both religious history and the evolution of the German language.
