Paulus Gerhardt's Geistliche Lieder: Mit Einleitung und Lebensabriss von Karl Gerok

This collection gathers the sacred hymns of Paul Gerhardt, the 17th-century theologian and poet whose work remains foundational to German Lutheran hymnody. This specific edition was published in the late 19th century, a period marked by a revival of interest in historical German literature and pietistic devotional writing. It was curated with an introductory biography by Karl Gerok, a prominent German theologian and poet of the era, who sought to contextualize Gerhardt's lyrical legacy for a contemporary audience struggling with the rapid industrialization and secularization of the late 1800s.

The design of this volume reflects the classic aesthetic of 19th-century German academic publishing, prioritizing readability and archival integrity to preserve the original German verse. Karl Gerok’s contribution was intended to bridge the gap between Gerhardt’s period of intense religious upheaval during the Thirty Years' War and the spiritual needs of his own generation. The volume was received as a scholarly effort to solidify Gerhardt’s place in the canon of national heritage, serving both as a devotional text and a piece of cultural history.
