Penguindrum

Penguindrum, or Mawaru Penguindrum, originated as an original anime series directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara and produced by the studio Brain's Base in 2011. The series was designed to explore complex themes of fate, family trauma, and collective guilt, drawing heavily on the historical significance of the 1995 Tokyo subway sarin attack. Ikuhara, known for his symbolic and avant-garde directorial style, sought to create a narrative that questioned the societal structures of modern Japan through a surreal, metaphor-heavy lens.

The visual identity of the project, characterized by distinct geometric patterns and bold, minimalist character designs, was influenced by the work of Lily Hoshino and the broader aesthetic of Japanese mid-century modern art. Upon its release, the series garnered significant critical attention for its intricate storytelling and refusal to provide easy resolutions. Its publication history later expanded to include various print adaptations and manga volumes, which serve to preserve the show's intricate subtext and stylized visual language for a wider audience.
