Pierre and His People: Tales of the Far North.

Pierre and His People: Tales of the Far North, authored by Gilbert Parker, was first published in 1892. It emerged during a period of intense late-Victorian interest in the Canadian frontier, establishing Parker as a key figure in the popular 'northern' literary genre. The collection focuses on the lives of Métis and French-Canadian characters in the Hudson's Bay Company territories, reflecting the romanticized yet rugged perception of the North that defined the era's colonial fiction.

The stories were designed to capture the exoticism of the wilderness for an international readership, heavily influenced by the tradition of local color writing. Upon its release, the collection was well received for its atmospheric descriptions and its focus on character-driven narratives within a harsh environment. It played a significant role in cementing the literary trope of the 'noble' trapper and the untamed Canadian landscape that persisted in popular culture for several decades.
