Where it came from
Pocari-kun wa Gokai o Tokitai is a manga series authored by Junichi Inoue, centered on the mascot character Pocari-kun, who serves as the face of the popular Japanese sports drink Pocari Sweat. The work emerged from the brand's long-standing tradition of using approachable, friendly marketing figures to humanize their products, with Inoue crafting a narrative that frames the mascot as a character navigating life and misunderstandings.
The series reflects a trend in Japanese commercial culture where corporate mascots are given original narratives in manga or webcomic formats to deepen consumer engagement. Inoue utilized a lighthearted, comedic tone to align with the refreshing image of the brand, focusing on situational humor that appeals to fans of mascot-led storytelling while reinforcing the identity of the drink through serialized entertainment.
