Where it came from
Pocket Monsters: Mewtwo! Ware wa Koko ni ari, or Mewtwo! I Am Here, was released in 1999 as a direct tie-in to the television special of the same name. Written and illustrated by Machito Gomi, the manga serves as an adaptation of the sequel to the first Pokémon feature film, delving deeper into the internal struggle and existential plight of the engineered Pokémon, Mewtwo, following his departure from New Island.
The design of the manga mirrors the aesthetic of the late-nineties Pokémon franchise, characterized by Gomi’s dynamic, action-oriented panel layouts that capture the intensity of Mewtwo's psychic abilities. Published by Shogakukan, it was intended to bridge the gap between film and print media, providing fans of the anime with a condensed version of the special's narrative, which focuses on themes of identity and belonging that were central to Mewtwo's character development during that era.
