Poe no Ichizoku

Poe no Ichizoku, or The Poe Clan, was serialized by Moto Hagio starting in 1972, emerging as a foundational work of the shōjo manga genre. Hagio was part of the Year 24 Group, a cohort of female artists who revolutionized Japanese comics by introducing complex psychological themes, non-linear narratives, and androgynous aesthetics. The story follows Edgar and Marybelle Portsnell, immortal vampires wandering through nineteenth- and twentieth-century Europe, using their supernatural existence to explore profound loneliness and the tragedy of eternal youth.

Hagio drew significant inspiration from European Gothic literature and classic film aesthetics, aiming to create a melancholic, poetic atmosphere that defied the lighthearted conventions of 1970s girls' manga. Her delicate, detailed illustration style emphasized the ethereal beauty of her characters, cementing the series as a masterpiece of aesthetic storytelling. Upon release, it was met with widespread critical acclaim, credited with expanding the intellectual and emotional scope of manga and influencing generations of artists in both shōjo and shōnen categories.
