This 1851 collection of Thomas Lovell Beddoes's poetry was published posthumously, edited by his friend and literary executor, Thomas Forbes Kensal. Beddoes, a physician and poet whose work was heavily influenced by the English Renaissance dramatists, had died by suicide in 1849, leaving behind a complex and largely unorganized body of work. Kensal took on the task of gathering these manuscripts to ensure Beddoes's eccentric and often dark verse reached a wider audience.

The publication represents the final effort to canonize Beddoes's idiosyncratic literary style, which is characterized by a macabre, gothic sensibility and an intense preoccupation with death and mortality. The volume includes his most noted play, The Bride's Tragedy, alongside various lyrical poems and the improvisatore pieces.
