Where it came from
Pokémon: The Legend of the Dragon King, written and illustrated by Takashi Ishii, emerged during the late 1990s as part of the initial wave of Pokémon-related media expansion beyond the primary video game series. It was serialized in CoroCoro Comic, a monthly magazine instrumental in fostering the Pokémon phenomenon in Japan by providing supplemental narratives and lore to a younger demographic.
The manga is characterized by its unconventional take on the Pokémon universe, focusing on a more rugged and adventurous aesthetic compared to the standard adaptations. Takashi Ishii utilized a distinct, energetic art style that leaned into the battle-focused aspects of the franchise, aiming to capture the excitement of competitive play. While it is often overshadowed by the more mainstream Pokémon Adventures series, it remains a notable example of the creative experimentation allowed within the early Pokémon brand licensing.
