Where it came from
Protecting Yourself! 'Danger Around Us' was produced during the late 20th century in Japan as part of a specialized series of educational manga aimed at elementary school students. These volumes were designed to serve as accessible, preventative tools for social education, addressing the growing concerns surrounding public safety and personal security for children in urbanizing environments. The series functioned as a bridge between official government-recommended safety guidelines and the visual literacy favored by youth at the time.
The illustrations and narrative direction by Takeo Funao reflect a distinct pedagogical approach, utilizing a clear, instructional manga style to convey serious warnings about potential risks. By breaking down complex survival strategies into relatable scenarios, Funao intended to foster situational awareness without inducing undue alarm. While these books were primarily distributed through educational networks and school libraries rather than commercial bookstore shelves, they remain highly regarded among collectors for their role in the specific genre of safety-themed manga.
