Where it came from
RD Sennou Chousashitsu, known in English as Real Drive, originated as an original anime series conceived by Masamune Shirow and produced by Production I.G in 2008. The story is set in a future where the virtual network known as the Meta Real Network has become essential to daily life, focusing on a group of investigators tasked with maintaining security within this digital landscape. Shirow, renowned for his work on Ghost in the Shell, designed the conceptual framework of the series to explore the intersection of human consciousness and advanced cybernetic infrastructure.
The manga adaptation, which serves as a companion to the television series, captures the intricate world-building Shirow is known for. The visual direction emphasizes the contrast between the mundane physical world and the complex data streams of the network. While the series received moderate attention upon its release, it is noted by enthusiasts for its philosophical inquiries into identity and the evolution of the internet, fitting well within the broader thematic legacy of Shirow's contributions to the cyberpunk genre.
